Telephony

[Unlocking Phones]

There are 3 ways unlocking telephones:

Hard unlock

  • Where you or a professional/dealer reflashes your phone to stock manufacturer firmware.
  • You will lose all the information stored on the phone.
  • It is a expensive form of unlock.
  • There is no branding on the firmware. (startup/shut down images being network logo and button may be tied to an operator specific action)

Soft unlock

  • Where you install a piece of software or enter a code given to you by your operator or a company that specializes in phone unlocking.
  • Branding remains.
  • you get to keep your data in most cases.
  • relatively cheap or even free if the phone you are trying to unlock has a large userbase. (but for some devices like t-mobile's G1 its rather expensive)
  • If your lock isn't official (using a piece of software to unlock it rather than a code) the device may lose its lock and you will have to wait until someone in the community/userbase provide an updated version of the unlock.

Sim spoofing unlock

  • Sim spoofing is where you insert a device the shape of a sim card and as thick as a sheet of paper between the phone and sim card.
  • Some of these devices require you to cut a section of your SIM card to accommodate the microchip in the device.
  • These devices are moderately priced. (more than soft unlock and less than hard unlock)
  • Branding is still there.
  • And some anecdotal comments saying that it drains batteries quicker.
  • Should work on all phones produced after 1998.
